Mark Meredith – “Functional Pottery”

Mark Meredith was raised on the west coast of Canada, in the small village of Caulfield in West Vancouver, in the 40’s and 50’s.

He graduated from High School in 1961. During the 60’s he was involved in many businesses from the grain business to stocks and bonds and the office furniture business.

He then studied Business Management at BCIT where he majored in Marketing Technology specializing in Retail Management. This led him into sales promotion which he enjoyed the most.

Through this educational experience he became involved in the Sales Promotion of Historic Gastown in Vancouver in its infancy. This led to his discovery of pottery, which became his passion for the next thirty years.

He moved to Salt Spring Island in 1978 where he soon became involved in the development of the arts and crafts business, including the early development of ARTCRAFT. He was influential in making the Saturday Market the success that it is today, including coining the name “Market in the Park” and the slogan “Make it, Bake it or Grow it”.

His day-to-day business of throwing and firing his famous Salt Spring Blue glaze is complimented by the development of his garden and gallery in Vesuvious Bay with his wife Jacqueline and her wonderful watercolours, depicting the tranquility of the island.

The gallery is open all year round everyday except Saturday when he is at the “Market in the Park”.
